A Placeholder in Reality

One of my sisters said to me the other day, “I looked at your site and it’s wonderful. The writing is great and I love what you’re talking about, but you know… maybe you should make it clearer what its all about.”

She’s accurate in many ways, especially if one does things the way reality works. We have to spell everything out, sell people on what we’re doing, make it totally clear in our websites or anything we are endeavoring to “get the word out” about our work, what EXACTLY it is we are providing.

Given that I value her opinion greatly (she is an amazing public relations expert), I was even astonished by my answer to her.

“It’s simply a placeholder in reality so that people who are looking for me can find me easily.”

Having worked with hundreds of people over the years… I’ve learned something really important. Everyone is right where they are and I just need to show up for them.

When I start working with a client, I may “wish” they were further along in their journey (because it would be nice for them)… but I can’t “make” them arrive there, nor do I EVER feel concern or judgment towards them. They have to make their own way, through their limitations or fears & I understand that where they may not. My work to meet them where they are with tremendous respect, while I translate their inner wisdom until they can hear it on their own…

Another thing that’s crystal clear to me is that what works for one person may not be helpful to another… at all.

For example, would you tell your small baby that it was time for her to stand up and walk when she was 4 months old? No, of course not. That example is almost the same kind of “impossible” as if you told someone who had never felt they’d amounted to much that they were to begin seeing themselves as successful and popular. They wouldn’t actually be able to do this anymore than your 4 month old baby would be able to just stand up and walk.

With so many “quick” solutions to choose from out there; whether they show you how to build a business, find your mate, make more money, lose weight… whatever they propose they cure you from… it’s REALLY challenging for people to make significant changes that last. Especially people who are already sort of tuned in. What works for mass consciousness, doesn’t work that well for the folks I loving call “weirdos” (I’m a huge weirdo, so I can say that).

Being available somehow, whether that means through an ineffective website or just giving a talk somewhere, is what I do to make it possible for others an ability to find me. The Universe works in magical ways and somehow, due to it’s ability to orchestrate seemingly impossible connections, it happens.

Years back, I stumbled onto a tarot deck. The woman who made them with her partner at the time, was an independent feminist scholar who happened to also have created a deck of cards. I bought the cards, even though I’d never used tarot cards in my life (and actually didn’t know what they were for) and started learning how to read them. Because I was obsessed with all of it; the images, the power of the oracular ability I found that I had and the historic information about women, all coalesced into me taking a class at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York where I met and become fast friends with the author, Vicki Noble.

Now 25 years later she remains one of my most powerful teachers and now a very dear friend. She officiated at my wedding last year, bringing her unique ability to create sacred space and perform ritual, to our ceremony. I never could have imagined that the significance of that first impulse to buy those cards would offer so much value. But I had always learned to listen when I heard to do something illogical. I still do.

Just two years ago I left my home and went to Maui for 2 months on retreat. I lived in a shack behind my daughter’s house and literally prayed for 60 days. During the first week I was there, I met a woman who has a sacred garden that contains two labyrinths for meditation. The proprietor of the garden gave me a woman’s card who was a teacher of teachers, feeling that I could benefit from working with her. I promptly lost the card until a week before I was scheduled to return to the mainland. Somehow that lost card was found (it was buried in the car I was driving and just surfaced on a day when I was really struggling)… and I heard to call her… so I did.

Again, without knowing the importance or the remarkable timing of this connection I began working with her that day. That connection has proven to be yet another magical orchestration of energies that provide me with the next steps in my journey as a soul teacher…

Being met where I was by these two women meant that I could integrate what I was discovering. Never being able to be like others meant that sometimes the tried and true methods I paid to learn, just didn’t work. Not long term, anyway.

Listening to what our inner wisdom is telling us looks like what I’ve described. It can mean that you “turn right” or “take that highway” or “sit down here”… it’s never outrageous or loud, but a soft impulse to do or say something. That wisdom will never let you down and you will be graced with what seem like miracles when you follow that voice.

Additionally, when you work with someone who is clear that YOU are your own best friend, best lover, best teacher and best guide… they will never be a teacher who encourages dependence on them, but will keep guiding you back to you…

It’s a light touch, but it’s strong. I trust that this blog is that way. Someone, somewhere is looking for help and I am their teacher.
